Tiffany
This story comes from the Summer 2003 edition of Hands
Helping Paws
We try to call and check back on our cats from time to time to
see how they are doing. Tiffany's story exemplifies why this is
imperative.
Tiffany, a gorgeous Maine Coon mother cat, was the very first cat
into our shelter when we opened it in 1994. She and her three kittens
were rescued from a filthy home where the owners had been evicted
and a padlock was on the door. Tiffany could get out of the house,
to be fed on the porch by us, until the constable unbolted the door
a week later.
We found homes for the three kittens. Tiffany lived at the shelter
but was aggressive toward the other cats. She definitely needed
to be an only cat. Then a musician named Pete came along and adopted
Tiffany. She loved his piano playing and they lived happily together
for several years.
One August, I was thinking about Tiffany and Pete and decided to
give them a call. I tried for days without success, finally contacting
a friend of Pete's who gave me the sad news that Pete had died on
one of the days I called. I quickly asked where Tiffany was. She
had been locked in the apartment for several days, until the police
and landlord came, bolting when the door opened. The landlord, who
had a fondness for Maine Coon cats, caught her and took her home
to live with his family and two other Maine Coons. Tiffany, needing
to be an only cat, was not getting along with the others. When I
contacted the landlord, he was most happy to return Tiffany to me.
I put her in a cage at the shelter, hoping someone would come along
quickly to adopt her. She was a loving, sociable cat with people.
Fortunately, she did not have long to wait. A volunteer's mother
who is the director of a personal care home needed a cat to live
at her facility and visit the residents. What a perfect place for
Tiffany! She is the center of attention and loving every minute
of it. Tiffany needed us to rescue her twice.
